With the "silly season" almost complete, Formula Mazda rotary engines are starting to warm up in the Southwest.  Texas Autosports and Formula Mazda are excited to release our 2012 Formula Car Challenge presented by Goodyear - Southwest Schedule.  There have been some challenges with the schedule, but we are happy to announce we have a date set at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in April, and will be finishing off the season and holding the awards banquet at the newly constructed NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale, LA.  For those who have not experienced a facility designed by Alan Wilson, such as Miller Motorsports Park, I assure you, we are in for a treat at NOLA.

2012 will mark our first complete season as Texas Autosports' new owners, and it is with great pride and appreciation that we thank all of you for making this transition possible and fruitful.  We anticipate great things to come this year and are tirelessly working on more sponsorship support for Formula Mazda.  It is looking very promising.

We hope that you will all come out and join us for the 2012 Formula Car Challenge Southwest Series!  The first race will be held at Texas World Speedway on the weekend of March 10th.

Please get your entries in as soon as possible!  Having confirmed entries helps in our planning as well as negotiating your winnings with potential sponsors.  We are working diligently to bring prizes and monetary awards to our drivers and continuing to grow the car count at Formula Mazda events.

Please pay special attention to some changes in the series format and rules.  There will be no drop races in the 2012 Schedule.  It will consist of 6 weekends in which all races will be counted towards the championship points structure.  There are some changes to the tire specifications, 475 compound, as well as a maximum 6 tire rule per weekend.

Also there have been some changes and clarifications in the SCCA General Competition Rules for Formula Mazda.  It is imperative that all competitors become famiilar with these changes.

"The battles this weekend were epic," noted FCC Series Official Ben Hettema. "GoPro's media staff had cameras all over cars in the field, and we can't wait to see some of the action up close." GoPro, the event's title sponsor, is producing two short features covering the event that will be posted to the FCC and GoPro websites in a few weeks.

On Sunday, right after the GoPro Formula Car Challenge race, Infineon Raceway celebrated Military Appreciation Day with a variety of tributes to the Armed Forces highlighted by a six-jet air show by the Patriots Jet Demonstration team. "It was great to complete our event and celebrate together while the airshow entertained us," noted one of the racers. "This weekend has been one big party."

Following the lead of the FCC racers Penske driver Will Power took the top spot in qualifying, and led 71 of the 75 laps in the IZOD IndyCar Grand Prix of Sonoma. Team Penske swept the top three spots, with Helio Castroneves second, and Ryan Briscoe third. "This is like home for me," said Power. "To start 1-2-3 and finish 1-2-3, what a dream weekend."

The next event for The GoPro Formula Car Challenge presented by Goodyear is September 8-11 at Mid Ohio Sportscar Course to determine the national champion.
